The Three C’s of Rope Courses
The Association for Challenge Course Technology defines a challenge course as "a series of activities, sometimes on or close to the ground (usually referred to as a low course) and sometimes built on utility poles or trees, or in the rafters of a building (a high course)." They can be installed in schools, camps, parks, and corporate training facilities and are commonly used as training grounds or extracurricular activities. Do you think you have what it takes to undergo the challenge? Let’s understand why the three Cs are essential for ropes course programs.
Challenge
Challenge courses are designed using different elements, designs and varying levels of difficulty set indoors or outdoors. In The Research and Literature on Challenge Courses, 2nd Edition: An Annotated Biography, "Challenge courses allow individuals to improve confidence, problem solving, self-efficacy, self-concept, trust, teamwork and communication." This goes to show that the challenge is not just physical, but also mental.
Communication
Communication is very important because the challenge will not be complete without teamwork. A collaboration of ideas is also helpful because this encourages each team member to participate leading to better teamwork. Sometimes, facilitators also have ice breakers just before the teams start embarking on the ropes course to break the ice. Coaching from the team leader is allowed especially when developing a strategy.
Commitment
Commitment not only applies to the team but more importantly, in oneself. Believing that you can complete the ropes course with flair will give you enough confidence to get you through the ropes course activity. Commitment to succeed is another healthy attitude because it can boost morale and make you more focused.
Overall, rope courses are very effective tools for personal growth. Challenge, communication and commitment are three principles that encourage you to successfully get you out of your comfort zone and achieve a sense of fulfillment.
